Corporate Social InvestmentAs a subset of its Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) program, Great Basin Gold also views Corporate Social Investment (CSI) contributions as a significant means of providing assistance where needed. Burnstone Mine operates in an impoverished host community where the Company has participated in CSI projects such as the supply of winter blankets to the elderly and orphans, working with the Department of Education to run soup kitchens throughout the school holidays and granting sponsorships to individuals excelling at sport and culture. The prevalence of HIV/AIDS in the community surrounding Burnstone is also a cause for concern. To assist, Great Basin Gold upgraded three Multi Purpose Centres that form part of an orphan feeding scheme in the Dipaleseng area. Further, the Company is involved in crime prevention and drug awareness activities, the creation of a multi-purpose centre for vulnerable children in Grootvlei in which 88 children participate, and sponsorship of a youth month celebration to launch a regional soccer and netball tournament. Great Basin Gold's Nevada Operations have sponsored several basketball teams from the nearby town of Owyhee, including purchasing team uniforms and donations of hotel rooms to allow for participation in tournaments. Monetary assistance has also been provided to local community organizations such as Nevada Health Centers, Special Olympics, People to People and the Northern Nevada Mine Rescue Association, among others. |
